Chapala is a classic Mexican town located about 7km east of Ajijic. Beyond a few lakeside restaurants and a crafts market, it's from here that you can take boat rides to explore Lago de Chapala. Tours of the lake include stopping at Isla de los Alacranes and Isla de Mezcala; the prior is popular for its eateries, the latter for the ruins of a fort that saw action during the fight for Mexican independence. Boat rides are charged by the boatload--around $40 to Isla de los Alacranes, $140 to Isla de Mezcala.

Chapala is simply one of the most beautiful places on the planet, tucked as it between Lago de Chapala and the mountain surrounding the lakeside. And the people are extremely friendly (though some are a bit shy).
