Very nice business hotel in Harvard Square. Would be perfect, but health and safety culture has taken over a bit. So the windows don't open in your rooms and there seems to be an upper limit on how hot the water can get. But otherwise very good.

This is one of very few hotels in the immediate Harvard Square area, and is a great choice if you're looking to stay near any of the Harvard campuses in the area. There are a couple of great restaurants inside: Henrietta's Table is great for farm-to-table cuisine and has a patio, Rialto has amazing food in a more modern & chic environment, Noir is a great place for happy hour or quick bites. The location is also convenient -- close to lots of restaurants and bars and shopping in the square. In the winter, they set up a small ice skating rink in the plaza in front of the hotel, and in the warmer months they set up an outdoor patio bar as an extension to Noir.

The hotel rooms can get expensive as a result of high demand and points in time, since all the recruiters (October and April), graduation attendees (May/June), parents coming to take their kids to school (August/September) etc. start here, so try to book early if you have plans to visit. It sits right next to the Charles River, so some rooms have a view of the water. In the hotel itself, the rooms are fine, nothing over-the-top amazing, but comfortable and have everything you would need. They also have many Zipcars parked in the parking lot, so that is convenient if you need a car for a few hours.

I’ll start this one with the best, most unique part of the Charles Hotel. Each room’s bathroom has a television in the mirror. How cool is that? Anyway, the Charles has more to offer than just a tv in the loo. For instance, guests have access to an actual gym and not just a fitness center. There are also four restaurants on site, so guests don’t really have to leave the complex. The rooms, aside from the bathroom tv, are pretty good. Each has a unique feeling to it, mostly because the paintings on the wall are weird in a cool way. It is, however, insanely easy to get confused by the hallways since they seem to go on forever in an Escher-like loop; even the front desk assistant who saw us to the room got confused. The staff was pretty friendly and seemed generally interested in helping us.

The price is not bad for all the service and extras you get. The rooms here feel very individual, with specific, quirky decorations (like a neat faceless gear-clock) and tall wooden headboards for the bed. Of course, I’ve got to mention the remote-controlled TV in the bathroom mirror; never seen that in a hotel before, and it’s in all the rooms. The staff is very friendly and chatty, and there’s a total of four restaurants onsite, ranging from New England-style fare to Asian cuisine. Regattabar brings in local and visiting live jazz acts, as well as various events and concert series from season to season. A hotel this close to all the bars and clubs of Central Square doesn’t even need to have its own entertainment, and the fact that this one does puts it up a notch in my book. Really, there’s enough stuff here that the Charles should feel more like a big glossy resort but somehow it doesn’t overwhelm.
