When this hotel complex was built in the mid-1980s, it transformed King St. and really our lives. It was all upscale from then on. The dusty shops with styles from the ‘50s were gradually replaced by what we now have here, Gucci and Louis Vutton. The hotel lobby is dominated by two staircases of a “Gone with The Wind” caliber, illuminated by a mega-crystal chandelier. A whirl of social interaction, leisure guests mingle with conference attendees and Charlestonians, all gathering and conversing at the three restaurants. The piano man plays at The Thoroughbred Club for the lively cocktail hour, lunch is one of the best in town at the Palmetto Café and its tropical courtyard. By night the action centers at The Charleston Grill, with live jazz and a glorious menu and ambiance. Orient-Express, that high-end hotel group, took over the hotel complex and is constantly maintaining and upgrading. The latest is that the existing armoires could not accommodate large, flat screen TVs so out they go and in comes custom-made ones. Nice.

It was a holiday weekend and I needed a place to put my family up for the night. After an extensive search I found Charleston place. A hotel that is part of the Orient Express chain and very nice but this is not a family friendly hotel. That is not to say they were rude or unwelcoming. Quite the opposite. The atmosphere is much more fine dining and spa treatments. The prices reflect this. My wife wanted to be close to historical downtown, and the kids were relentless on wanting to go swimming. This hotel met both criteria. Walking distance to most things and a very nice pool on the 4th floor roof. Glass ceiling but completely enclosed. Very nice. There was not much to complain about for a 5 star. The room was beautifully decorated and spacious. The lobby and statue outside in the turnabout were picturesque. If you were a honeymooner or a iconic anniversary I would certainly look at this hotel.Recommended for:Family Travelers

Charleston Place is really nice hotel to stay in. The location is great, just across the street from the market. The hotel itself has stores and two restaurants on site as well.
The concierge desk helped with a lot of recomendations for dinner and had little cards they gave out with directions from the hotel to the destiantions.
Depending on where your room is, it may be a long walk around the winding hallways to get to it, but they are a good size.
