We just spent over 4 months at villa cielo as we moved to los angeles from Europe last summer.
The location of the house is great, only 100 yards from the parking lot of the beach and a few steps from the restaurants and bars of the touristy venice pier area. The downside of the location is that we slept with earplugs each night and that garbage and delivery trucks at 6am are in the alley behind the house almost every morning. A chef of an adjacent restaurant got stabbed to death at the end of the alley while we were there with our walk street cordoned off as part of the crime scene. With young kids that was not very reassuring for us, plus the killer never got caught
The house itself is charming if somewhat outdated and a bit somber. I would say without kids and to party in venice beach it would be great. Be aware though that the other tenant above the garage will hear your every word as her bedroom is right above the outdoor patio area while another neighbour 2 yards to the left is a newborn baby so evening noise is not ideal.
The house only has one central furnace heater in the floor of the living room which seemed to date from when the house was built in 1920 so it did get rather chilly in the colder months with gas fireplace not helping much, however there are small portable electric heaters for the bedrooms.
I would recommend a few streets further in from Washington blvd or the venice canals -where we are renting now - they are more quiet yet still close to all the action and feel more kid-friendly.
