Great Christmas attraction. About as close as you will get to Munich in Illinois. A nice diversion if you are in Chicago during the winter.

When you are in the Millenium Park area, Buckingham Fountain is a "Must Do", especially in summer. It's a gorgeous backdrop for pictures and was in the opening scene of "Married with Children", the 80's sitcom.

Great history and stories surrounding the Water Tower especially during the Chicago Fire. Once blackened by ashes, the tower has been restored and anchors Michigan Avenue. Free and worth walking by.

Can't go wrong with chocolate and this store is a great spot to pick up HUGE amounts of candy.

I love that all the restaurants are so close... one of the truly great things about Chicago neighborhoods. Most every venue everything has been Americanized.

In addition to being free, peaceful and close to downtown, this magical getaway is also Easily acceptable by taking the green line towards Harlem. Donations are accepted for the upkeep but no guilt trips if your budget doesn't allow for it. Truly a green paradise in the city.

One of the best home decor / design centers in the US. It is massive. Less a tourist attraction than a place to find inspiration if you are on the verge of embarking on a decorating spree.

My favorite of the Loop sculptural icons. The splash of red against the backdrop of black / grey government buildings is impressive. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Great architecture and one of the most beautiful public libraries I have visited. Take a look from the outside and download what you need to your Kindle. Worth seeing as part of an architectural tour, but the inside is of little interest to visitors.

A good #2 for men in Chicago. The men's section is a bit conservative but is a great place to pick up basics -- and, occasionally, that special jacket, sweater or pair of shoes.

Consistently good / friendly Chicago bar. Nice and clean with a somewhat industrial atmosphere. The crowd is consistently good (and good looking) on the weekends but most people are pretty down to earth. They could be a little more inventive on the cocktails but as long as you stick to the basics you are fine. The lines can get pretty ...

Probably the most famous comedy club in America. The food is terrible and the seats could be more comfortable but this is probably THE place to go for Improv.

    Chicago River

The river is a great way to explore the city. The best way to see it is with an architectural boat tour -- one of the highlights of a visit to Chicago. The river takes center stage during St. Patrick's Day when it "turns" green in honor of the Irish community.

A spectacular way to learn about Chicago architecture (when the weather is good). All of the architectural tours are fantastic but spending time on the water gives you a bit of distance and a chance to really observe. One of my favorite Chicago tourist experiences.

One of the great urban centers of the United States. The architecture is lovely, the people are friendly, and the food is excellent. The location next to Lake Michigan makes this a truly special place -- just avoid it in the winter.

Tacos, whiskey shots, and pitchers of margaritas may not sound like much, but this bar has some of the best of all three this side of the Rio Grande. If the weather is good, plan to spend a casual Sunday afternoon at this Mexican staple.
