As the closest point to the Sun on planet Earth, Chimborazo conjures both a spiritual and intellectual following. The now dormant Chimborazo volcano is Ecuador's highest point and, due to a bulge at the Equator, the furthest from the core of the planet. Home to vicuña and mountain lion, the broad páramo grasslands of this beautiful national protected area are amongst the best kept secrets in wilderness adventure. Indigenous highland Quechua communities call this region home and offer both tradition and sanctuary in an otherwise unforgivingly harsh high-altitude environment.
