Description

As the oldest Chinatown in the United States, this San Francisco neighborhood is a microcosm of China itself, with its own hospitals, government, herbal shops, pagoda roofs and local infrastructure. The Dragon Gate on Grant Avenue and Bush Street lets visitors know they are about to enter this city within a city, before winding past dim sum restaurants and jade jewelry shops. If you tend to avoid crowds, be warned: Chinatown is the most densely populated neighborhood in the city. Still, it is a truly unique experience to watch its residents celebrate the Autumn Moon Festival and Chinese New Year - firecrackers pop, lanterns light up the streets, and suddenly you are in another world.
