Decent museum. I liked the old Christchurch town that you could walk through and the paua house. Haven't been back since the quake but would like to check out the Canterbury Quakes Exhibition that they currently have on.

I took the train from Christchurch to Greymouth, though it is possible to get off at other stops before this. The trip is expensive, but the scenery is amazing. The train does have several cars that are open air for people who want to photograph the trip without an intervening window.
