    The Botanic Gardens

    12 reviews

The grounds were extensive and fabulous. Many strange and interesting plants to learn about. There is a great playground for kids (we got stuck here with our energetic 3 yo) with a small restaurant nearby for sustinance. A great place for a picnic and to while away an afternoon if you need some downtime.

    Cathedral Square

    13 reviews

Nice Farmers Market on the weekend. Central location for catching the trolley. The tourist info center is here as well so helpful for orienting yourself. I heard the cathedral itself sustained severe damage in the quake.

Lovely beach, good for a nice walk or a swim. Sumner also has plenty of nice places for a coffee and wee craft shops to browse through.

    International Antarctic Centre

    5 reviews

The Antarctic Centre is a great place to spend a few hours in Christchurch. You can get up close and personal with some penguins, ride on a snow-cat and even step into a room that's the same temperature as the South Pole! great for the kids and anyone with an interest in the deep, deep south!

    Christ Church Cathedral

    3 reviews

Severely damaged by the recent , the ChristChurch Cathedral was one of the highlights of my visit to this beautiful city. The people of New Zealand are resilient and I am sure one day soon this church will be restored to it's former glory.

    Canterbury Museum

    3 reviews

Not a bad little museum. There's a dinosaur skeleton and a vehicle from Antarctica, which are the things I remember most from my visit.

    TranzAlpine Experience

    1 review

I took the train from Christchurch to Greymouth, though it is possible to get off at other stops before this. The trip is expensive, but the scenery is amazing. The train does have several cars that are open air for people who want to photograph the trip without an intervening window.
