While we love the Clift for its luxurious guest rooms and suites, our favorite part about this city center hotel is the hipper-than-hip bar, The Redwood Room. Strap on your stilettos and get gussied up, as this is THE place to be most nights of the week. The rooms at the Clift are minimalist chic, modern without a lot of extra fluff. Right in the middle of the theatre and nightlife district of San Francisco, the Clift is within walking distance to many of the top restaurants, bars, and clubs of downtown San Francisco.

People rave about this hotel but I'd rather stay across the street at the Hotel Monaco any day for any price. The Clift brings all that overdesigned and over self-importance of NYC and dumps it into usually less pretentious (but still smug!) San Francisco. Go for a drink. If you normally go to Miami and think the Standard in NYC is the best hotel of the century. Then actually, you should stay here when in SF.

The public spaces at this property are exceptional and it is hard not to fall in love with the hotel bar, the Redwood Room. Service is adequate and the location isn't too far from Union Square. Unfortunately, the rooms themselves are pretty unimpressive. I found the white and muted purple color scheme to be a a bit drab. I also had major problems with my bill on check out (though this was clearly accidental).
I'd still say I "liked it" but unless you are getting a deal, better to opt for a less hip luxury property and drop in to see the Redwood Room.

If you want to be near Union Square, this boutique hotel has an edge. Contemporary-chic decor, cozy rooms and a downstairs bar that's always happening during happy hour and late night makes it a great choice - and you'll usually pay less than at the big high-rise chain hotels nearby. The big downside is expensive overnight parking - don't bring a car here, if you can avoid it.

Super hip and glamorous boutique hotel in the heart of Union Square. Suites are chic, and make for a great spot to host an intimate soiree. For some sexy cocktails, head to the Redwood Room downstairs.

Clift Hotel is beautiful in every way; the staff are professional, the building is well-maintained and the location is perfect. You can always see good-looking people walk in and out of the hotel, most likely thanks to the Redwood Room, the hotel's bar. It can get a bit pretentious in there, and I had a friend who would go there specifically to let older men buy her drinks (don't ask). The hotel, however, is a gem.
There are a lot of top bars and lounges located nearby, as well as restaurants from affordable to chic. Staying out all night can easily be done within a one-block radius of the hotel.

Wow, such a great time. Amazing location, gorgeous rooms, great mysterious vibe to the whole thing. Number one choice for hotels in Union Square. Boutique feel without the tiny boutique sized rooms.

I have never stayed in the rooms here but I have been to the red room. It's a bar in the hotel the is a lot of fun on a weekend night. It's up scale and crowded and good place to network. The drink prices are very high so don't be shocked at the $12 beers.

My husband and I eloped in SF and had a magical time at the Clift. We were upgraded to an amazing suite and felt like a king and queen. Thank you!!! Top notch staff, cute rooms, great location with their own happening bar downstairs. You almost don't need to leave the hotel!
