I was on a 2 week business trip to San Francisco, and my company forgot to put me up at a hotel. So as soon as I arrived at SFO, our office manager went about looking for deals nearby the office which was in SOMA area. The office manager said she could only get a one-night at a place nearby called the "CLIFT" for tonight, and the rest of the two weeks near the airport, which I could get a rental car to get to. Said she got an incredible deal... so I thought... hmmm got lucky on getting something really cheap, nearby, so it's probably not so great... I can walk to the place. The office manager mentions she has a friend who works at the bar there, so suggested i check it out. ... so without much expectation, I arrive, and the place is awesome!!! The bar is classy, the furniture and lobby is classical but modern... beautiful... and then I get to the room... nicest SF victorian architecture I've ever lived in (even for a day) and the soap.... yeah... the soap is in this cool plastic designed box, beautiful.... I liked it so much, i asked for another one when checking out... and graciously was given one. Even though it was for one night... i'll never forget how an unplanned disastrous situation, turned out to be the best hotel stay I ever had! I await the day that I can bring my family to stay at this hotel. the beauty of the architecture, the interior uniqueness, never found in a chain hotel... the while linen... the soap!!! and the classy bar and the convenience of walking out of the hotel smack in the middle of urban union square... Nothing has beaten this yet.Recommended for:

Famous for its Redwood room, the Clift Hotel also has hotel rooms! The decor in the hotel rooms is modern & clean and no-fuss. It will be hosting free summer music nights in the hotel bar, and for this I am more excited to go. In addition to the warm redwood walls, I love the new media portraits hanging on the walls. So Harry Potter.

This hotel has a dark, maple feel that is sophisticated and beautifully classy. Out of the big high-end hotels (Mark Hopkins, The Fairmont, etc.) I found that this was most worth the $$ if you want to splurge. The rooms have top of the line amenities and the beds are the most comfortable ones I've slept in, even if you stay in the most standard room.
Also -- the bar and restaurant are out of this world. The Redwood Room is the bar, complete with old fashioned paintings on the wall whose eyes move around the room. Really cool even if you just go for the experience! And Asia de Cuba, the restaurant, has amazing dishes like Grilled Butterfish (amazing!) with 1st class service.

I didn't care too much for our upgraded room but I loved the staff and the lobby decor . . . it makes everything so worth it.
Our room which was on the fifth floor resembled an overhauled motel room. It seemed basic and small. I didn't like the beech wood sled bed frame, but then again, I am a true minimalist in that sense. Like I mentioned before, I didn't care for the room itself since it was just a place to crash. The bed was comfortable and I had a great night's sleep.
Our friend's apartment room on the 14th floor was beautiful and spacious and I didn't ask how much she paid for it.
Be forewarned about valet parking. It is $50 and a $7 tax which makes it $57 total to valet park at the hotel. That is no misprint. Yes, $57. Luckily, I asked the manager to deduct the amount and he kindly did. Again, kudos for a customer-service oriented staff.
LOVE THE LOBBY.
