Colorado is truly a wonderland of outdoor activities, with the Rocky Mountains to the west, and scores of parks preserves and other protected areas scattered throughout the state. But Colorado also boasts a surprising array of cultural outlets and popular events, from museums and live music, to street festivals and sporting events. household names like Aspen, Vail, and Telluride, and myriad smaller resorts sporting great local flavor. In the summertime, the mountains offer outstanding hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and more. Rocky Mountain National Park, a short drive from Denver, has stunning views from its trails and roadways, including snowy peaks and alpine lakes, even herds of elk sauntering through the high valleys. Elsewhere in the state, you can marvel at the ancient mud dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park, or peer into the dizzying abyss at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument. For families on the move, Dinosaur National Monument and Great Sand Dunes National Monument are sure-fire hits. And Colorado isn’t just for outdoorsy types; it’s got a team in all four professional sports (plus soccer and lacrosse), and lively dining and nightlife in cities like Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs. Music lovers can catch a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre or an aria or two at the historic Central City Opera House. And if any place loves a good street festival it’s Colorado, with annual shindigs like the Great American Beer Festival in Denver and Frozen Dead Guy Days in Nederland, among many others.
