For fans of modern décor, Condesa DF is a breathtaking hotel – and its sky-high prices reflect that. A hip aqua- and walnut-colored lobby, bar and multiroom lounge greet guests with modern furniture, funky light fixtures and cowhide accents, while a triangular courtyard boasts eye-catching architecture. All the rooms have WiFi and breakfast is included, but only if you reserve directly through the hotel, the clerks say. Built in 1928, the former apartment building was converted into a hotel eight years ago. The biggest room, a huge corner suite with a wraparound balcony, is called the Top Suite. The standard room I saw had a queen bed, a modern white table with brown leather chairs and a yellow floral stool, as well as a DVD player, mini bar, snacks and a safe. The rooftop terrace, though, is probably the coolest part of this 40-room hotel, with views of Chapultepec Castle and Parque España, a sushi bar, a regular bar and a lime-green hot tub with a waterfall. Meanwhile, the tiny rooftop gym, which consists of a treadmill, a stationary bike and a small punching bag, seems skimpy.

It's difficult for me not to give this hotel five stars, but it's just a little too expensive. Although unbelievably hip and attractive, the smallest rooms are simply too small and simple to justify the price. But, if you've got money to spend, this is a great place in a great neighborhood. The 40-room hotel has a trendy bar and restaurant on the ground floor -- the host bragged about the bar's excellent mixologists -- and a sushi bar on the beautiful rooftop terrace. The whole place feels very modern, with clean lines, wood paneling and bright white walls throughout. The hip factor is everywhere: in the hot tub tucked away in a corner of the roof and fed by a little waterfall, in the Roman numerals designating the rooms, in the 1930s-era car out front with a huge wind-up key sticking out of it. This place is just plain cool. Too bad it's so darn expensive.Recommended for:
