Boston's second oldest hotel offers some charm that you can't find in newer, chain hotels. The beds are not nearly as comfy as they could be, but this is a solid choice if you're looking for a place to stay in downtown Boston. It's easy walking distance to the Prudential Center (large, upscale indoor mall) and you can pick up the popular Duck tour 1/2 block away.

The Copley Square hotel is one of those rare finds. Friendly, luxurious, less than super expensive. Stand out elements include the happy hour, free Wi-fi (I don't know about you all, but I'm sooo tired of paying $20 a day or the like for internet at upper middle class hotels) and quirkily shaped rooms that reflect the historic character of the building.

This is a well-balanced hotel that has a nice mix of everything: good location adjacent to but not right in the middle of Copley Square, adequately-sized rooms. The building has a lot of history and though all of the modern amenities are there it’s still got the unique design of an older structure. The bathrooms and closets are slanted at unusual angles but it doesn’t take away from the amount of space and, to me, only adds to the overall charm and uniqueness. The complimentary Wi-Fi is a very welcome touch, and there’s a lot to do without even leaving your hotel: the pseud-speakeasy/club Storyville is in the basement, and the other restaurant, Xhale, is elegant but affordable. The whole place has this pleasantly subdued feel, a nice change if you’re used to staying in flashier chain hotels. The staff is also genuinely nice and full of useful recommendations, and not just in the usual generic bellhop way. If you’re looking for a hotel that has everything and isn’t outrageously expensive, give this one a try.

The Copley Square Hotel has some serious bang for your buck. The hotel offers complimentary wifi and has an exercise center on site (though it's on the smaller side). Bottled water is also provided daily during turndown, and guests can help themselves to free coffee in the morning and free seasonal beverages (hot chocolate was on tap during our visit) in the afternoon everyday in the lobby. A complimentary wine tasting is also offered everyday. The hotel is located in the heart of Back Bay in the shadow of the Prudential Center and a stone's throw from Copley Square proper. The hotel itself is in a century-old building that gives the rooms -- which are of decent size -- some unique angles which help distinguish this hotel from newer ones. The rooms also have a darker, earthier feel to them that differentiates them from rooms at other hotels. The hotel's staff was also very friendly and helpful. Prices at XHALE, the on-site restaurant, are on par with neighboring restaurants, with entrees in the $14 to $25 range.
