This bohemian bar in West Greenich Village has an old school vibe, complete with wood floors and a jukebox. But the real draw is the Bistro burger, which has been on the menu virtually unchanged since the 1960s. It starts with 8 ounces of chuck, sirloin and top round, and is broiled until it forms a dark crust. No spices are used, and most diners would agree that it doesn’t need them. The hefty patty is then topped off with a sesame seed bun, American cheese and bacon. At only $8.75, this is still a great deal for a gourmet burger in an increasingly expensive town.

Never mind all those gourmet burgers out there--this is as old-school as it comes. A good old corner bar with wood floors and a jazz jukebox--that would be nice on its own. But in the back is space for about 15 people to sit and eat big fat burgers. They're nothing fancy, but they remind you why a hamburger is so great in the first place. Normally I like a flame-broiled burger, but these are good even so--I think it's because they cook them in basically an industrial-scale toaster oven, right under a broiler element.

One of New York's classic burger joints. It's a dark wood pub, and has been serving juicy, fresh burgers on little paper plates for years. French Fries are optional. Amazingly, they've kept the prices low-at $5.75 for a hamburger and $6.75 for the Bistro Burger, a deluxe version. Like most great places in this crowded city, if you go at a popular time you will probably wait in line.

The Corner Bistro is know for their burgers because they're massive! The burgers are good but unless you want a cinder block sitting in your stomach, it's advisable that you either share it with a friend or take some home for left overs. It can also get crowded during dinner, so come promptly to avoid waiting in line.

Great spot for burgers and beers. Corner joint that gets very crowded, and 1/2 of the crowd in the bar is actually standing in line for one of the few tables so they can order a burger. The menu's not that big, but you've got your choice of cheeseburger, chiliburger, or the Bistro Burger with both cheese and bacon. The burger is great, but the fries aren't, but you need to know this place is cash only so go to that ATM beforehand.
