Cozumel is a resort for cruise ship stop-overs. There's a fence around the place, which I felt was to keep cruisers in more than it was to keep locals out. The beaches are very nice, the food is so-so, and the shopping is expensive.

If you like to dive, this is a good place to spend some time. Stay as close to town as possible, or at the very least just south, which will save you some boat time to the reefs.
There are a lot of nice places to dive, but Cozumel is actually a nice place to offgas as well. The nightlife has the usual "Señior Froggy" type places, which are fun and all, but it also has a lot of really great food (shrimp wrapped in steak wrapped in bacon! booyah! On a pretty rooftop restaurant! love it!) , nice quiet restaurants, some naughty nightlife for those who are into that, and... a great quiet windward side that is totally free of both cruiser ship tourists and divers.
rent a scooter (if you know what you're doing) and ride to the "other" side of the island - it's pristine!
But really, if you dive, bring your kit, check into a hotel that has a pier, and dive three times a day. the night diving here is fantastic. Lots of bioluminencent (sp?) microorganisms, easy navigation over sandy planes,
oh man, just go. and bring your dive computer and nitrox card. You will want both.

When I went to Cozumel we rented mopeds and rode to the "deserted" part of the island where hardly anyone goes and it was so much fun. There were shells and coral reefs - and of course the water was beautiful. No people so I got to lay nude on the beach! So much fun!
