The largest of all the Greek Islands is also my favorite! It is one of the largest islands in Europe with a landscape that is complex and entirely different from one side to another. Some of the most beautiful beaches are on this island. There is the Samaria Gorge where you start hiking in the mountains and end up at sea level. The ferry to Sfakia, Elounda Beach, The Historical Ruins at Knossos. Too much for me to mention but definitely something for everyone.

Visiting Crete fulfilled every beautiful cliche of the Greek Islands: the crystal blue water, white roofed houses, sandy beaches and flavorful food. On the boat ride over there from Athens we witnessed a man packing at least 50 sheep into his small car, which gave us a glimpse into the very rural aspect of Crete as well. Make sure to do your research on which beaches to visit: on one trip, we were met with a wall of stinging sand, and later found out that this particular stretch of land was notorious for its painful sunbathing.

If you go to Heraklion you can stay at Kastro Hotel very close to the city centre and if you reserve a room with booking.com you can find a very cheap prices.
So you can go also to Chania a wonderful city and you can enjoy the typical food in a one of the greek tavernas near the port.
Kissamos - Kastelli is a little town perfect to visit the near beaches like Falasarna, Balos and Elafonissi. You can stay at Mirtilos Studios (I advice to reserve by booking.com) close to the sea and the city centre.

I have been in Crete with my husband in the beginning of June 2010, we were celebrating our 1st anniversary. We stayed in Hersonissos Maris (4 stars), a beautiful hotel with flowering garden and magical corners. The food was delicious, the room was beautiful and very clean. The hotel is located on the beach and it's a walking distance from city center of Hersonissos. We explored Heraklion one day, the capital of Crete and really liked walking around in the markets. We also rent a car and traveled to Chania, harbor city in the west of Crete. The way itself is beautiful, the scenery is vary from the sea, up to the mountains and back to the harbor. You can spend there a few hours, there are few places to see and even just walking around in the streets near by the harbor is fun and beautiful. I heard from other travelers that the east site of the island is also recommended, the leprous island, fishermen villages and beautiful and closer drive than to Chania. I will do it next time....
