The Crowne Plaza is a massive complex situated right on top of the Yarra River. Not to be confused with the Crown Towers and casino across the street, the Crowne Plaza is its own entity complete with convention center-sized meeting rooms (and also located just a few blocks from the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre)—so presumably a great place to stay if you’re in town for a convention. The rooms and bathrooms are everything you need, if not too much more. Same goes for the small gym and oddly mushroom-shaped outdoor pool. There’s a bar in the lobby and a business center, both of which work out well for conference attendees.Recommended for:

Now this is weird: Crowne Plaza, while located directly across the river from the famous Crown Casino and its enormous complex, is not in fact the same company, rather the Crowne is part of the Intercontinental Hotels Group. Under no circumstances should you book a stay at the Crowne Plaza thinking you will be just a short elevator ride from the pokies. You are in fact a short *walk* from them, and from the Melbourne Exhibition Centre and the vast array of upmarket bars and bistros along the Yarra River. The Crowne Plaza is also quite close to Southern Cross train station, which is great if you are taking the Skybus to the airport or a train out of town.
The Crowne Plaza is a confusing building. The entrance is hard to find and once you do walk into the lobby, escalators explode from it in all different directions and it is hard to know which way to walk. I can’t recommend the gym, which is nearly exclusively cardio machines, but the pool is heated and I always welcome a breakfast buffet. The rooms are nothing worth writing home for and valet parking and the wifi are surprisingly expensive. I was impressed with the size of the place and the location, and in many ways it was satisfactory, but given the price and lack of amenities, it probably wouldn’t be the first place I’d recommend.
