I've been here a few times, and I've never been totally blown away by anything. The best things they serve are the mini samosas! They're so cute! If they were sold separately, I'd stop by just for an order of those with some chutney, but they only come with certain dishes. The big samosas are okay, but I've had some ...

    Sweet Breams

0.06 mi from Curry Up Now

the thought of Sweet Breams and their little fishes snacks brings a smile to my face. The little shop is very cute (kawaii) decorated with Japanese anime but the main attraction here are the tiny red bean paste or nutella, or the daily special filled egg puffy fishies.

One of those days... It had been a long, rewarding yet tiresome day... till we found this place. It had been a long day and all I wanted to do was eat. I was in the city for the wrong reason and the only thing I had to show for it was 'the perfect gift' bought and a hungry stomach. ...

Great place for Taiwanese breakfast! Be prepared for the stench of stinky tofu, though! After a while you get used to it, but at first it is a pretty assaulting pungent smell. The simple combination of sweet soy milk and chinese "donuts" is my favorite here. Their shredded pork & bean curd is very good here too!

I don't know if I'd say all Nor Cal mexican food sucks (burritos aren't even mexican) but this place is pretty bomb, though they raised the prices twice in the last 5 years which is really annoying. The nachos are great and the super burrito is probably your best bet. Don't fuck with the seafood ones, you will get sick.

Interesting take on Filipino food. There's a slight wait for main dishes, but it comes hot and tasty. Staff is super friendly and accommodating. Drinks are good, and some are pretty unique. There's a lounge area by the bar (upstairs, with the dining area), which I think I'd prefer over the bar downstairs.

    Izakaya Mai Japanese Restaurant

0.06 mi from Curry Up Now

I love izakayas in general, and I am pretty picky about them. The food here is good, but it is a little less imaginative than I have seen at other izakayas, and there is not as much variety in their dishes. I had the albacore tataki (just OK), agedashi tofu (also just OK) and some noodle soups. The noodle soups ...

Oysters, mussels, and crab poppers! And bread pudding and beignets and awesome staff. I don't live in the neighborhood, but it's a short drive from the office; given that background and how often you'd think I dine here, the staff (at least those who recognize us) always seem so excited to have us there, even if we're being served by ...

From regular ol' milk tea to specialties with crema, fresh milk to icy drinks, there's something for everyone. There are a few tables and chairs for the lucky ones, and an unpretentious feel to this place. Lines are not too bad. Does anyone know about this place?

If you think about it from a density or choice perspective, San Mateo has a similar density of Japanese and izakaya as Millbrae has to dim sum restaurants. The "J-tapas pub" lineup includes: Lakuni, Oidon, Izakaya Mai, Yakitori Kokko (the only true yakitori themed izakaya out of the lot), and now Izakaya Ginji (from most senior to junior). Sushi Sam's ...

This is like the soup nazi joint on Seinfeld... only it's izakaya. The owner and his wife run this little joint. About 10 seats at the bar. Sometimes crowded, but mostly only frequented by in-the-know die hard izakaya foodies. The service can be gruff if the owner doesn't like you... meaning you don't speak Japanese, you ask if they serve ...

Astaria is a great choice if you are meeting friends from both the south bay and San Francisco. The food is good and the restaurant has a chic atmosphere. Great for meeting up for cocktails/happy hour or brunch.
