Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas Travel Guide
Avg. Rating:59 Reviews
The Sacred Valley of the Incas was a key area of settlement to the Incas due to the Urubamba River, which is fed by numerous rivers that descend from the mountains and gorges, and its moderate climate and fertile plains that made the area agreeable for settlement. The area also provided a route to the jungle with its tropical fruits and plants. The valley served as a buffer zone protecting Cusco from incursions by nearby jungle tribes. Today the Sacred Valley remains a lush agricultural region supplying the city of Cusco with much of its produce.

An epic trip! The Sacred Valley held so much history and stories from the Inca period. The archaeological sites of Inca ruins we visited were huge, complex communities, many still being excavated and restored today.
Along our journey, we tried delicious Peruvian cuisine, Pisco Sours, at least 4 different varieties of potatoes, Peruvian coffee, guinea pig, and alpaca.

Remarkably accessible even to the novice traveler. Cusco and the Sacred Valley are filled with options for travelers of all budgets and interest. Gone are the days of the Shining Path and tourists have returned in mass. Petty crime is still an issue and the weather can create logistical hassles but all-in-all the magic of the region far exceeds the potential risks.

Cusco and the Sacred Valley were the best part of our trip to Peru. Cusco is a small city but it's so lively you barely realize you are in a centuries year old city and there is so much history around everywhere you look at that it's become one of the most fantastic places I've been to. The Sacred Valley is a must go attraction and tells the story of the Inca empire along its path, a truly amazing experience.

Truly one of the wonders of the world. The Incan Civilization created some spectacular works, and there is no place better to see some of the amazing buildings and cities that they constructed than the Sacred Valley near Cusco.

An amazingly powerful place with amazing feats of architecture / Rock Masonry by the Incas. I stayed just outside the gates to be the first one in on my 24th birthday. What a day and what an experience. That was 15 years ago now so who knows how things may have changed.
