The WRH Trastevere is a small gem of a guesthouse in one of my favorite Roman neighborhoods. Entering through the heavy Italian door you feel like you're stepping into a classic Roman scene, but once ... read more
inside, funky modern design dominates. Tiny red tiles cover a curved countertop in the entry, and each room (there are only 5) is decorated uniquely by a husband and wife design team. Ours featured a giant Marilyn screen was decorated with fragrant white lilies. The WRH is run by three colleagues, Fabrizio, Alex, and Maria, who are truly welcoming and friendly. I wasn't able to check in until much later than the closing time for reception, so they waited four hours for me and then offered me coffee on arrival. The rooms are big and comfortable, with Umbrian white wine and taralli greeting you on arrival. Rainforest showers and more cute red tiles make the morning toilette a pleasure. The location is within easy walking of great restaurants and bars. Breakfast is included with your stay and is at a little Roman bar across the street. I would definitely highly recommend the WRH to fellow travellers.

Hey Cynthia, check the WRH Trastevere. Sometimes they have rooms for under 100, and it's a sweet hotel.

Naples is a wild ride. The food is notoriously amazing, but so is the crime. It's beautiful but untamed, a really unique place among Italian cities. Great art and architecture go hand in hand with ... read more

If you're looking for something a little different (most people do a Florence or Umbria day trip from Rome) you could head south and check out Naples. The pizza is incredible and the city is really interesting. It's rougher around the edges than Florence or Orvieto, but it's worth checking out.

Spoleto is a great example of an Italian hill town. It's also the home to the Festival dei Due Mundi-the Spoleto Festival, as it's otherwise known. Off the main piazza, look out for a little trattoria ... read more

Spoleto is another Umbrian hill town, an easy day trip from Rome. Siena is a bit far, though Mark is right it's beautiful.

Orvieto is a lovely little Umbrian hill town, which is right on the train from Rome and thus not, shall we say, undiscovered. However, the Duomo is one of the loveliest sights in this part of Italy. ... read more
