Velibs are great! Just remember if you are American and do not have a chip in your credit card, chances are you will be unable to use the Velibs. They do not take cash or coins. I believe it will work if you have an Amex card though, if I remember correctly.

There are velib stations throughout Paris which makes picking up and returning the bikes very easy. Apparently both locals and tourists use these convenient mode of transportation, however, navigating ... read more
on a bike through the busy streets of Paris could be daunting. Nevertheless, one of my best Paris memories, make that travel memories were of biking through the quiet streets of Paris in the middle of the night. Amazing! The kiosks accept credit card but make sure it is one with the chip, or a Velib card (like a prepaid card) which could be purchased at any tourist info center. City bike share/rentals are the best idea EVER! especially when both locals and tourist could enjoy this service.

Hi Daria, if you don't have a credit card that has a chip or an amex, you will not be able to use the kiosks for the initial purchase as those are the only credit cards they take. you could purchase a velib card from any of the tourist offices and then use them at the kiosks. It is quite inexpensive and the first half hour use is free! (if you don't purchase the 1 day or 7 day plan). they will however keep a 30 euro hold your credit card as security deposit which will be reversed upon safe return of the bike on your last use. enjoy paris on the velib, it is fun!

Daria, it's not expensive at all...a 7 day ticket is only €8. Definitely the cheapest way around the city, considering that a carnet of 10 metro tickets is around €11 and you might go through that in a day. I haven't used Paris's system per se, but I'd recommend these systems in general. All the best!

Daria, this place is super affordable and really tasty, in Montmartre. You'll have good luck wandering around as well, the area is packed with places.
