The Days Inn Gateway is on busy New York Avenue, NE between the DC and Maryland line. The hotel is for the serious budget traveler and a traveler not looking for luxury, but just a clean place to lay your head. The hotel has a shuttle to take you back and forth into the city near the monuments and sight seeing. It has a pool, but it’s currently closed all summer, which isn’t good for tourists. I would advise guests to be aware of your surroundings because it’s not in the best neighborhood and there are shady characters walking around.

I just thought this hotel was kind of sad. When I arrived, the lobby was deserted and I had to wait for someone to appear at the front desk. The pool will be closed through the summer of 2014.

The good points: It's near gas stations and fast food and parking in this neighborhood is either free or inexpensive.

Near the busy intersection of New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road, the hotel really isn't near any tourist spots except the National Arboretum. There is a shuttle bus that will take you to Union Station, where you can walk to Capitol Hill or get on the Metro.

There’s nothing wrong with this place. It’s clean. The furniture looks newer than some I’ve seen in other hotels with fancier reputations. There’s an outdoor pool and continental breakfast is included. There’s a restaurant, but it’s currently closed for renovations. But you can always go to Joe’s Noodle Express, right next door, or Dunkin’ Donuts, the Chinese place or the barbecue place. The exterior entrances scream “motel” to me, but it looks fine. Parking is a bargain out here – $5 for guests, $10 for non-guests.

The only problem is there’s a Holiday Inn Express right across the street that’s much newer and nicer, and it’s the same price. But parking is $15 a day.

I wasn't thrilled here. The location isn't amazing, and the first impression from the lobby is that this is a pretty bare bones experience. That turns out to be the case, as the rooms are fine but nothing special and the amenities are much the same.

There's nothing wrong, per se, with this Days Inn but I was still pretty underwhelmed. There are some comparably priced options across the street that are much nicer, even considering the complementary breakfast and outdoor pool of the Days Inn. The staff is nice enough and the rooms are just fine, but since the location is so mediocre and there are better options close by, this isn't one I'd recommend.

This hotel did it's job as I stayed here for a night while touring DC for a day and then flew back to California out of Reagan Airport. Don't expect much, but compared to how pricey hotels can get in DC it served it's purpose for me with an added value.
