Just a short puddle-jumper flight away from the main island of Mahe, Denis Island is a tiny, flat stretch of land, right in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The island itself is entirely owned and run by the resort of the same name and from the second you arrive on Denis Island, the people who work at the resort make you feel completely taken care of, sometimes to the point of excess. The staff to guest ratio is usually three to one and guests are assigned their own maid or butler. This is a wild part of the world and there are certainly elements of traveling to Denis Island that would not suit everyone. The second one enters the calm, bright turquoise ocean, one feels a million little fish, nibbling at one's ankles. A French gentleman staying at the resort while I was there, was rather fond of fishing at night and would take a boat out by himself, to fish under the moonlight. One night he came back shaking, having seen two enormous great white sharks, very near to his boat. My sister was badly bitten by a centipede on the path between our room and the dining room and on rainy evenings, we were terrified to take that path to dinner, because we were both so scared of the possibility of getting struck in the head by a coconut, the number one cause of death in the Seychelles. If you are someone who likes to run, you should be forewarned that a jog around the island will lead you to the spiders, which though harmless, are quite literally the size of a human head. For those looking for a totally private tropical paradise, Denis Island is a perfect destination and I went entire afternoons without seeing another hotel guest. The food is excellent and the rooms are lovely, but this is not a hotel to go to if you cannot live without a high-speed internet connection or a big-screen TV. Denis Island is ideal for brave luxury-seekers and if you are looking for an opulent adventure, this island is a dream come true.
