In the best tradition of the labyrinthine market. Wander the aisles and inhale perfume oils and fresh flowers, pick up some technicolor dye, and see more bananas than you ever thought possible. The better silk shops are outside the market, however.

Perhaps the most lively market in South India, Devaraja Market is one of the two must-see stops in Mysore (the other being the incredibly ornate Mysore Palace). Meander through several city blocks of bananas, coconuts, brightly colored piles of kumkum (powders used for bindis and other decorations), and massive flower garlands for deities. You can easily spend an entire day watching the bustle pass through all the scents and colors here.

Description:

Devaraja market is an ideal place to get a flavor of the local’s daily life. With more than 100 years of history, this market is well knitted into the heritage of Mysore. If you are new to the bazaars of India in general, do not miss Devaraja Market. This is a good example of a traditional Indian market place - colorful, noisy, vibrant and a tad chaotic.
