The Dorchester gets points just for its historical accolades. After all, it is an Iconic Art Deco site. The matching decor also hits all the right points but the moldy smell is hard to ignore. Still, the patio is a lovely spot for an evening respite from the well-grooved tourist tracks of nearby Lincoln Road and Collins. But I do have to wonder about a place that serves $1 vodka tonics for happy hour. In any case, the swing under the banyan tree is a beautiful place for dreams to die. And a pool? Please. The beach is literally across the street. This place has unmistakable charm and reasonable rates. Plus, the unique Art Deco is a nice break from the soulless and overdone hotel chains. The Dorchester is pure South Beach.

I was first drawn to the Dorchester, as it's located 2 blocks away from Lincoln Road, the pedestrian-only shopping district, and 4 blocks away from the famed Ocean Drive. The location is ideal, as nightlife, shopping and the beach are within walking distance, and with this hotel, location is what you are paying for. The rooms are fine. They're comfortable and have been slightly modernized. However, they could still use a bit more updating. The Dorchester is not right on the beach, but beach access is granted through a sister property across the street. If you're in Miami to relax, this might not be the best choice, as I did find the hotel slightly noisy. If you're in Miami to party, the central location serves as a great jumping off point.

I loved this place! Sure it doesn't look exactly like the pictures and they could do a better job vacuuming the halls and floors in the public walk ways, but the charm of this hotel makes up for all of it. I guess I fell in love the lobby at first site and perhaps saw the rest through rose colored glasses? I don't know what it was about this place exactly, but I'll be back!
