In the high-end community of Carmel Mountain, nestled on several sprawling acres of perfect golf greens, is the Doubletree Golf Resort. If you're looking for luxury, the polo and white shorts company, and a camplike retreat from the city, look no further. The half-museum, half-lobby entrance is pristine and eloquently decorated in the same fashion I imagine many of the guests' homes are: with modern furniture that looks like you shouldn't touch it, classy black and cream colors, and a golf cart on display. The room was surprisingly, well, enormous, with peaceful views of the golf course between sweeping willow branches. The pub/bistro is quite impressive, with a separate bar area or tables where you can order a variety of burgers, sandwiches, or salads - try the buttermilk parmesan chicken served with jalapeno cheese corn bread. YUM. And my favorite place, as a non-golfer, was probably the fitness center: complete with a tennis court, two swimming pools (one with roped off lap aisles), plenty of poolside chairs and tables for reading, working, or partying; and a little gym with machines. Beneath the shade of enormous trees, I honestly felt like I was back at summer camp.Recommended for:

Boy, talk about luxurious. This Doubletree hotel and golf resort has a little bit of everything, and is especially perfect for those who love golfing! The hotel itself has a really nice pool, which is wonderful for those who get dragged to golf courses but don't really love the sport! The room was GIANT and very comfortable, with a wonderful balcony overlooking the pool. The room included a hair dryer, and iron and table, and a coffee machine. If you are here for the golfing, they do offer package deals with the room. It really is a golf fanatic's dream at this Doubletree, and even I was impressed (I am not a huge golfer). They offer a full fitness center, complete with a separate pool for lap swimmers, and a tennis court to practice your backhand. There is a super nice restaurant which looks out onto the golf course, and the essential snack shack by the pool. You honestly don't even have to leave this resort to enjoy your vacation, though this is also a great jumping off point for the many San Diego attractions. I could come back and stay for a year!Recommended for:

This place is GIGANTIC, and lo and behold, the day that I visited they were completely booked up. I could see why with the rolling golf course, separate laps and family pools, restaurant with patio seating, and myriad places to lounge in the perfect inland sunshine. I’ve never been inclined to join a country club, but the level of relaxation that permeates the walkways of this resort was enough to turn my head. The Rancho Bernardo/ Carmel Mountain areas aren’t particularly close to any major attractions, but that’s probably why this place has its own activities. The man at the front desk was also good-humored and apologetic about the lack of rooms, which I always enjoy as a way to soften the blow of bad news. I’m not sure if I was expecting a shout of, “GET OUT, STREET RAT!” but I appreciated the courtesy nonetheless. Maybe I’ll be back with a bottle of wine, a bathing suit, and a reservation.Recommended for:
