I stayed here a few years ago before returning today to review it, and I remember being unusually pleased with my room. We were here for a convention that was being held within the area, but I found myself in the room more often than not. We had a room near the top floor, and the view was just so wonderful. The same was true of today. The air was relatively clear, the trees were thick and green, and the horizon stretched on forever.

The hotel itself is heavily decorated with a southwestern theme. Giant rugs hang on the walls, cowboy hats and bull horns can be seen in various places, and Texas-sized stars were everywhere. They balance it out by trying to keep it classy with smart-looking furniture and walls of books. It's a bit much for me personally, but it's not like this is my house. The rooms, thankfully, aren't that kitschy.

With so much room to work with, this area has plenty to offer. The twin brass-colored towers that frame the area give the hotel the appearance of importance, and the view from up top is really impressive. And the fact that it's a quality hotel just makes it that much better.

With older hotels like this, the pressure is definitely on to stay competitive, especially in the heart of Dallas proper where there are so many business travelers on the hunt for lodging. Sandwiched between shimmering, two gold business towers, the brown Doubletree tower seems a little blah, but the entry experience makes up for the exterior immediately. The decor is contemporary, but not over-the-top modern so not to clash with the bits of Western flair incorporated into the design. The restaurant area is a generous size and so is the bar, which includes a few flatscreen TVs. The property shows its age in the elevator and the hallways (outdated carpet, popcorn ceilings), but the rooms have been refreshed to pull them out of the 80s. Par for the course are the flatscreen TV and iPod dock clock radio, but the fun choices in art and wallpaper give the room character. While the Doubletree hasn’t received a major overhaul, the updates they did make are impactful.

I just returned from a four night stay and cannot be happier to be back in my own bed. This hotel is located in north Dallas near the SMU campus and the Galleria. Not typically a part of town we stay in but someone in our group must have got a screaming deal because I was not impressed.

First off, out of four nights I MIGHT have only slept a total of 16-17 hours. This was due to three issues. 1. I could clearly hear the person in the room next to mine snoring. 2. The room was stuffy and the funky air conditioner was useless. 3. The beds and pillows were among the least comfortable I have experienced. Now I was able to take care of the snoring guy (or girl) by putting on my Ipod and listen to classical music. Not the best solution, but at least now I am well versed in Bach and Vivaldi and can now take over and conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra if needed.

The meeting facilities are decent and are wired for WIFI which they waived the charges for. The buffet breakfast and lunch were better than most. The staff were attentive and made sure that coffee and drinks were stocked and frequently checked to make sure that a fresh pot was available. The van drivers are super friendly and accommodating and took us where ever we needed to go at a moments notice.

Overall the location of the hotel and it's proximity to shopping and restaurants is good. The hotel staff is terrific and I would give them five stars easily. However this hotel falls short when it comes to providing a comfortable nights sleep.

    2 1/2 Stars
