San Francisco may be a small city, but ever since gold was spotted in Northern California in 1849, San Francisco has been the region's financial center – a fact attested to by the impressive collection of towers that have made their home on the city's skyline. But you'll find a lot more downtown than just blazers and bike messengers. Even San Francisco's business crowd is full of local food aficionados and coffee elitists, and downtown San Francisco provides for them. A great place to begin a visit is the iconic Ferry Building, a renovated pier at the soggy foot of San Francisco's main thoroughfare, Market Street. Gazing across the Bay from the Mahatma Gandhi statue, you will see the Bay Bridge, Treasure Island, and the East Bay (since you're in San Francisco now, be sure to gasp at how far away it is and decide never to leave your new comfort zone). Take a streetcar up Market Street, and jump off at any of the hole-in-the-wall Asian restaurants that strike your fancy. Or turn left into the upwardly mobile SoMa (South of Market) neighborhood, where you can find Blue Bottle Coffee or take in a Giants baseball game. Alternatively, join your tourist brethren and hop on the Powell Street Cable Car – the country's only National Monument on wheels – which will lug you past Union Square, through Chinatown, and over some of San Francisco's famous hills. Whatever route you take through the heart of this cultural metropolis, you will likely walk away in love.
