The Dylan is a unique and beautiful boutique hotel in a quiet inner suburb of Dublin, about a twenty-minute walk from town. It was designed in a style based on an edgy, Gothic luxury. Think dark velvets, oversized chairs, ornate silver-gilt frames. If I ever become involved in the production of a vampire movie set in Dublin, this hotel would top my location wish list. If you can get used to the theatricality of it all, you’re bound to have memorable stay. The rooms are all individually designed with meticulous attention to detail, very well put together and exceedingly comfortable. It’s one of the few hotels in Dublin where you’d be happy enough never venturing out into the city. In fact, you could easily forget you were staying in Dublin, or Ireland, or anywhere at all.

I have one petty complaint about the Dylan that probably says more about me than the hotel: I couldn’t find the entrance. They’ve joined an old building—a former nurses’ home—with a larger new one, and the doors to both were open and in use. After some confusion, I made my way inside to find a fabulously-designed space that contrasted sharply with its surrounds. It’s a boutique hotel, and the staff members make a point of catering to guests as individuals, right down to making sure that the iPod provided with your room has your kind of music in it (although it beggars belief to think that many people staying in five-star hotels would prefer that to using their own music players). The room was luxurious and had no shame in pointing out that fact. Certainly the most interesting hotel of its class in Dublin.
