Eastbank Esplanade

Portland, Oregon, United States
1 review

Some might think that the Eastbank Esplanade is the poor sister to it's Willamette-side sister across the river. Others might not even know it's here to be enjoyed. And when you throw in a Steel and Hawthorne Bridge crossing, this is one fine loop to people watch, admire local arts, watch cherry trees in seasonal bloom, enjoy the views, and ...

    Burnside Bridge

    0.24 mi from Eastbank Esplanade
    10 reviews

It's not the bridge that interests me so much as what's under it - one of the country's first homemade concrete skateparks build by skateboarders for skateboarders. Tons of rain and the absence of an indoor place to session, motivated the skaters in Portland to do something about it. The city didn't like it at first and demolished the concrete ...

    Oregon Convention Center

    0.24 mi from Eastbank Esplanade
    2 reviews

The Convention Center is 3.5. It's just in a slightly awkward place, I mean it's pretty close to downtown, but really the river is what makes this place a 3.5 instead of a 5. Getting there can be a nightmare if you don't use public transportation.

    Pearl District

    0.84 mi from Eastbank Esplanade
    32 reviews

The Pearl District used to be a term that described several upscale bars, restaurants, and art galleries that moved into an otherwise uninspiring area of southwest Portland. Now it's the thriving, well-designed, beautifully gentrified home to those Portland yuppies who were sick of living in vegan co-ops on the east side. It's close to public transportation, within an easy walk ...

When I'm in Portland I love to walk the main trail of Waterfront Park. It's best to go at dawn or dusk and enjoy the soft light and warm colors reflected on the river. Work up a sweat or lounge a bit and watch dragon boaters, scullers, kayakers, and even working ships on the waterway.

    Rose Garden Arena

    0.45 mi from Eastbank Esplanade
    11 reviews

I really like the arena. It is modern, clean, and in a very good location close to the highway. The only problems I have with it is that parking is impossible next to the garden (forces you to take public transportation) and you have to go a small distance if you want to go to a bar for drinks.

This is a beautiful chinese garden right in the heart of town. Once you set foot inside you forget you are right in downtown Portland. They have a nice tea house to have a bite before heading out to explore more of the city.

A long industrial bridge cutting across the Willamette River, the Broadway Bridge is one of the oldest city bridges in Portland. Built in 1913, the bridge spans 304 feet and is a vintage highlight among the many passing bridges cutting across Portland.

It really is a spectacle to see in person. The best thing about it is that even thought it is so large, it's very difficult to find. It's quite hidden, so make sure you note where it is exactly.

Of all the bars I dropped in on in Portland, this one was the most radically awesome for beer geeks. Digital displays over the bar give you the rundown of what's on tap today. It's a great way to discover what's new on the Pacific Northwest brew scene, like Double Mountain's Vaporized IPA made in Hood River.

This used to be the post office! Before that I assume it was an actual courthouse. Perhaps pioneers once held court there, but I kind of doubt it. Could make for a fun urban legend, though.
