Easter Island, or Rapa Nui according to the locals, has seen hard times. You probably know it for the gaint moai that reportedly led to the deforestation of the island. Now it's an annex of Chile and survives off the tourist trade. There are some great beaches here.

Since i'm from Sudamerica, going to an island near New Zealand and similar places was a suberb chance to get to know another culture. If you speak spanish, it is easier to feel comfortable in this magic place.
Take care of your budget because it is an all-around expensive experience.

Easter Island is such an amazing place with its history, moais, mystical qualities, and friendly hospitality of its people. Getting here is not "easy" but leaving here is definitely hard.

Description

Standing at more than 13 feet tall and weighing in at 14 tons, the stone statues found on Easter Island are one of the world's greatest mysteries. Some 800 heads on torsos, called moai by locals, dot the island. The first to find the statues were European explorers in 1722. However, to this day, archeologists and ethnographers still don't know the story behind these dour fellows.
