Ecuador gets a bit overlooked - other than the Galapagos Islands - but it has loads to offer and is small enough that you can pack lots in without lots of time travelling. Otavalo is touristy but definitely worth a visit to the market on a Saturday. There are some great peaks to climb and the famous Devil's Nose train trip is amazing. The coast of Ecuador doesn't have the beaches of Brazil, but if you need a break from the mountains head down to Manta and hang out for a few days. There's also the jungle and Vilcabamba which has an amazing climate and claims to have the oldest people in the world living there.

As an eco-nut, I believe when I get to Ecuador, I will love it - especially the Galapagos Islands. Experts at Travel-Ticker.com say that Ecuador is South America’s best deal for Spring Break (before peak season begins in May). All the regions in Ecuador offer savings during the Spring, and little Ecuador has something for everyone from the Galapagos Islands to the wonders of the Amazonian rain forest and views of the majestic Andes mountain range. Although rain may linger in some areas, that helps keep tourist levels and prices low.

Description

The small nation on South America’s west coast has cascading mountains, humid Amazon River valleys, arguably the world’s most fascinating living natural history museum by way of the Galápagos Islands, and a vibrant indigenous culture that will ignite passion in any traveler. Although Ecuador’s top attractions are not typically considered to be its cities, Quito, Guayaquil and the colonial Cuenca all have the potential to captivate visitors with their grandeur and unique twists on bright lights (Guayaquil has some of South America’s best nightlife). Further east, you’ll hit the Andes highlands, popular for hiking, and once you pass through those, you’ll be in the Amazonia. Ecuador’s Amazonian region suffers from some of the highest rates of deforestation and pollution among all Amazon rainforests, but it still holds fantastic biodiversity and opportunities for discovery. Of course, Ecuador’s greatest gem is found in the Galápagos Islands, located some 600 miles off the coast. It was here that Charles Darwin’s idea of evolution began to form, and the abundance of wildlife here will surely astound any visitor. ... read more
