Much less crowded than other Santa Barbara beaches, "El Cap" has good parking, and even an overnight camping area for vacationers looking to rough it — that is, as rough as drive-in camping at a beautiful beach can be. Just 15 miles north of Santa Barbara off Highway 101, it's an easy trip from town.

About a 20-minute drive northwest of Santa Barbara, this is a gorgeous SoCal Beach where you'll find tons of families camped out on weekends in tents and RVs. Play beach volleyball on the sand, ride the cycling path along the shoreline, or splash in the water (warmest during summer, but too chilly to swim in winter).

El Capitan State Beach is really fun. I bring my nieces and nephew there and they love it. There is a good break there and its not too crowded. El Capitan and Refugio are my favorites

Lovely uncrowded beach. Nice campgrounds. Great for a picnic or just gazing.

Description

Take some time to roam a piece of the Pacific Coast at El Capitan State Beach. A mellow beach highlighted by cacti, sycamore and oak trees that shade El Capitan Creek, the 24-mile coastal strip is also a popular campground. Hot showers are available for 25 cents. The camp store sells food and firewood. It is a nice place to spend a weekend, with excellent potential for a nature hike and stargazing ... read more
at night. Exit the 101 Freeway, about 19 miles north of Santa Barbara to reach the beach that boasts bluff and bike trails for hiking or two-wheeling toward Refugio Beach further up the coast.
