Description

Although El Salvador is small, it certainly doesn't lack for passion. Hit by hardship after hardship over the past century (earthquakes, civil war, crime, gang warfare), El Salvador has somehow persevered. Intrepid travelers willing to make the trek will have the Pacific coast beaches, cloud forests and pulsating city of San Salvador much to themselves. Although surfers know some of the world's best surfing beaches are here, El Salvador's newest visitors, those looking for eco-lodges and sustainable travel, head into the interior, where volcanoes, forests, waterfalls, rivers and wildlife abound. Colonial Suchitoto, the feather in the country's cap, is replete with graceful churches and cobblestone roads. The San Andres Archaeological Site and the Joya del Cerén offer Mayan ruins without the tour buses. And everywhere you go, you'll find the delicious Salvadoran pupusa, a thick corn tortilla usually filled with white cheese, refried beans or meat.
