The 826 shoppes have become a sort of pilgrimage to me as they spread around the US. The first being here is still my favorite. Mostly because of the aquarium viewing room with the happiest blowfish in the world.

Cool little local bar/pub in the mission to have some beers with friends. It was pretty busy on a Monday night, so I can only imagine even more so on the weekends. The apple cider beer was refreshing, and there is a nice variety to chose from.

Nice live music bar in the Mission with a decent selection of drinks. We weren't wowed by the music or atmosphere but it was a nice stop in the area.

The Mission is San Francisco's mecca for Latin immigrants and young hipsters, which means it's a fascinating melange of quirky bars, co-op art spaces, gentrified shopping areas, super cheap Mexican eateries, historical murals, public parks, and tiny dollar stores. Lots of 20-somethings who move to San Francisco try to settle here first, particularly for the myriad clubs, bars, and economic ...

When I was in San Francisco last year, I organize a subway bar crawl for our first night in town. It was a lot after a six hour drive from L.A., but it was the only night to do it. The other nights we were staying in South San Francisco, closer to the football stadium. (We were there primarily for ...

Super fun indoor mini golf if SF. They have custom-built holes with SF themes like the Trans-America building, Dia De Los Muertos, The Painted Ladies, etc. Features a full restaurant serving dinner and yummy bar bites on a stick (the chicken and waffles and corndogs were yummy!) you can while playing the holes. Can be crowded at times but you ...

Lone Palm has dive bar hipness with old-school Miami decor. Prices are good and the staff are nice. If it gets packed, however, there's not too much standing room as the place is populated by chairs.

Because you really need a bookstore located close enough to bars for drunk book buying. I can't say I'm innocent of that, but better books than anything else, right? Dog Eared Books is a fantastic local bookshop that sells a wide variety of books, including foreign language texts. The bin out front offers free books for anyone passing by. I ...

McSweeney's is an American publishing house founded by editor Dave Eggers. My first introduction to this work was Panorama, otherwise known as Issue 33 of McSweeney's Quarterly. It was a brilliant one-time-only and Sunday-edition sized reimaging of the daily newspaper. Since that time, I have subscribed to the Quarterly series and am currently reading "The End of Major Combat Operations" ...

Built by Spanish missionaries in 1791, the Mission Dolores is San Francisco's oldest building. Start at Mission Dolores and wind your way down Mission Street to Balmy Alley, ...
