I did a bit of research before choosing an elephant camp near Luang Prabang to visit, and Elephant Village seemed to be the best of the lot. They emphasize that the elephants are rescued from working conditions and treated well. As far as we could tell, mahouts refrain from using hooks to guide the elephants.
The Elephant Village itself is in a beautiful location by the river. We did a half day tour, which included meeting and feeding the elephants, a ride around the village, a side trip by boat to the beautiful Tad Se waterfalls, and a really nice lunch on their property. I'd recommend doing a full day tour where you get to ride in the river with the elephants, bathe them, and learn more about training.
Overall, it was an incredibly fun experience- touristy, yes, but well worth it.

These people really do love elephants and gosh, so do I. My next visit i am going to stay a night or two at the sanctuary. It is amazing to spend time with them. You will not feel sad for the elephants. Its a great place. A lifetime favorite.

They actually seem to care about the elephants here, which is not all that common on a continent where they are often abused. Highly recommended if you are interested in getting up close to Elephants. Book directly through their storefront on the main street in Luang Prabang.
