One of the smartest places to stay in the Western Cape and closer to being a (paying) guest in a sumptuous private home than staying in a hotel. There are 11 guest rooms in the main house, a beautiful 1906 Edwardian building named after a shipping magnate who bought it in the 1960s, but now under the ownership of a retired banker. For greater privacy there's a standalone three-story villa, with another under construction at the time of posting this review and due for completion in August 2013. The location, in the well-heeled neighbourhood of Bantry Bay puts it just 10 minutes drive away from the shops and restaurants of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and walking distance from the beachfront of Clifton. Excellent and very attentive service from highly-trained staff.Recommended for:

This Cape Edwardian Mansion set in 1,5 acres in the posh residential district of Bantry Bay has the best view of the Atlantic Ocean I have yet to see and may be the best home away from home in Cape Town that you’ll find. The personal service and relaxed atmosphere set the hotel apart –a sliding glass door opening into the kitchen invites guests to chat to the chef about how they’d like their dinner cooked. The nine rooms in the house are really spacious and each one is individually decorated in a classical, elegant style. There is also a fully-equipped gym and spa. A feature of the hotel is its incredible art collection – the walls are filled with the works of famous South African artists and entire rooms are dedicated to the greats; the Pierneef and Irma Stern lounges, a Preller library and John Meyer dining room. Beyond the immaculate lawns and pool with the most incredible view, is the Ellerman Contemporary Gallery, which is curated by the owner and managers of the hotel, and showcases young up-and-coming South African artists. In addition to the house there is a 5-bedroom contemporary villa which can be rented out as a 3 or 5-bed unit.

Very chic. Very very chic. But cozy at the same time. The Ellerman is one of those places that will stick for while. It does not come cheap, but you get a lot in return. All rooms are apparently equipped with flat-screen satellite TV for lazy Sunday mornings, underfloor heating for chilly winter das, air conditioning, Internet and a complimentary room bar. And then there the views over the ocean or mountain! What is nice about The Ellerman is that it is fairly small, with only nine rooms, two suites and a villa. No mass tourism here. Facilities include a spa, a gym and a pool that overlooks the ocean. How's that for decadence?
