With Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty the boat out to them stops at both so if you are interested you might as well see both but I wouldn't necessarily recommend going out of your way unless you have a specific interest in seeing them.

Statue of Liberty is really an icon of New York City. You simply cannot miss it. Even if the statue was not open due to renovations, still touched the pedestal. A must-see in NY, but be warned, it's a jungle to get the ferry, no lines in particular and heavy security check. You will wait a long time but the site is worth the wait.

Fantastic place to discover some immigrant history, I highly recommend Ellis Island! Just give yourself more time to do both islands as there are long queues and security checks heading to Liberty Island and also once you get there.
