In another life, I lived in Santiago for three years to study at one of the best Comparative Literature programs in the world. It took me a year and a half to discover Emporio La Rosa and two full minutes after that to realize that my relationship with ice cream had forever been changed.
Not only is Emporio stupid-cute (old-timey and situated on a median across from Parque Forrestal), it is open late, has free WIFI and has CHOCOLATE BASIL ICE CREAM. Let me repeat this so it sinks in: chocolate ice cream. With fresh basil inside. Oh, holy bells. This ice cream is the most amazing thing to happen to Chile since choripan, ave palta sandwiches, or the massive transportation redesign, Transantiago. It's better than the "Chile in 100 Words" poems that are written inside the subway--and this is coming from someone who is getting their MFA in Poetry. The sandwiches are also amazing (I recommend the turkey panini with avocado). Best of all, Emporio La Rosa is quiet--a miracle in this noisy clanging wonderful city of six million inhabitants.
