The house down on Whitehead Street is one of those places that I wouldn't say go to, but then again I wouldn't say dont. You are in Key West, and this is the number one tourist attraction down here. But if you aren't an avid reader of Ernest, then a lot of it is interesting more than fascinating. The guides are eager to answer any questions that you have during the 45 minute tour, and do their best to wax lyrical about Mr Hemingway, but at the end of the day he was a writer, who liked a drink and was a bit of a boy. One of the fascinating things however, is the amount of polydactyl cats that are hanging around the place. These are six toed cats that many of them descend directly from a cat called snowball that was given to Ernest by a visiting sea captain. So yes, go and see it, but remember that this is just a house where someone did some of his best writing.

There are still plenty of Ernest's six-toed cats living here!

Description:

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1968, the Ernest Hemingway Museum in Key West was the writer's home from 1931-1939. Guests can visit the home 365 days a year, and guided tours are available for a fee. The home, an impressive Spanish Colonial style mansion was built in 1851 and is still the largest residential home in Key West. The house still contains Hemingway's furniture and there are many unique features to learn about including a penny embedded in the swimming pool, a urinal in the garden and several cats on the property which are descendants of Hemingway's own cats.
