Eternal City, Eternal Playground: Rome for Families

Featured Guide
I have been living in Rome for almost two years now, have visited Rome over a dozen times, and I know the city well, like the back of my hand. Having traveled a lot, I always see families bringing their children to Rome. How lucky those children are to get to travel abroad: something that I never did until I was an adult. Rome has a lot to offer for the adult crowd, but is it a city for children? Unfortunately, it isn't easy to find things to do that are geared soley for children, but it is not impossible and will require a creative balance of museums, being outdoors, and soaking up the sights while keeping your children well fed and hydrated! This guide will hopefully give families some ideas of things to do with children that are both fun for adults and children alike.

Ostia Antica

Often missed by tourists who go to Rome, this archeological park shows you how Romans used to live. Ostia was Rome's port city which provided a necessary space for commerce and trade. You can see how bustling it must have been back in the day. Generally well preserved. Definitely stop and see the...

Centrale Montemartini

This museum mixes the industrial with the ancient and contains several rooms of ancient artifacts, mostly statuary. Many of these works were recovered from archaeological sites around the city, often from public works projects (such as the construction of Rome's metro). The museum is not your...

Ristorante Maccheroni

People love this place or hate it. I don't mind it at all, and it is one of the few restaurants that I have visited in the city that doesn't mind children dining. The food is pretty good, and I think that your children are bound to find something on the menu that is to their satisfaction. The staff are...

Planetario E Museo Astronomico

Tha Planetarium and Astronomy Museum in Rome is an amazing place to visit, and it is not often visited by tourists. Located in EUR, the planetarium is not far from the Museum of Roman Civilization (another fun place to bring your children, especially for the model recreation of ancient Rome). The...

Villa Borghese

Nothing like wide open spaces to let your kids runs loose after museum hopping and walking around. Villa Borghese is a relaxing place to unwind after a long day out and about. Of course, Villa Borghese is more fun when the weather is nice. There is always something fun to see and do in this large park....

Novecento

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city, and it is not far from the Protestant Cemetary and Piramide! After exploring the Aventine or spending a quiet afternoon exploring the cemetery, there's nothing like a nice meal and a glass of wine to make the evening complete. There's always a...

Museo Civico di Zoologia

This museum is a research center that focuses on biodiversity. It is a great place to bring children, especially if you want them to learn about biodiversity. While most of the exhibits are bound to be in Italian, you can still learn a lot from observing. The museum is located just north of the Villa...

Museo della Civiltà Romana

This fun museum has one of my favorite model replicas of ancient Rome! It is a fun museum to explore and bring your children, and it is not far from the Planetarium, either, so you can hit both places if your children are up for it. Museums are a great place to bring the family when the heat of the summer --...

Piazza del Campidoglio

This piazza is fun to explore, and there is always a vibrant crowd of tourists, government officials and people just looking to get some fresh air. The best time to come here is on the weekends when official business is generally light. This is a great piazza for the kids to walk around and see the...

Explora il Museo dei Bambini

This children's museum is a fun place to bring your children, especially if they are on the younger side. There's lots to see and do here, and this is a fun, safe environment where you don't have to worry about Rome traffic or your children getting in someone's way. This museum has been designed for...
