The only modern African nation to never suffer the indignity of colonisation, Ethiopia does things its own way. It stubbornly refuses to update to the Gregorian calendar, it enjoys its own unique alphabet that looks like little dancing men and it is where “3 in the morning” means three hours after sunrise. Okay, there are more famous places to go in Africa to do the safari thing, see a waterfall or climb a mountain, but if you want to discover Sub Saharan Africa’s only medieval castles (yes), drink the finest coffee in the world or meet humanity’s earliest ancestors – Ethiopia is the place to go. Who knows? You might even get one-up on Indiana Jones and find the Ark of the Covenant.Recommended for:

It is one of the most beautiful African countries. Cities like Lalibela, Axum, and Gonder have some unique and well preserved history. If you're into wildlife, like me, your head will spin when you realize how many endemic species live in this corner of the world. On top of all that, you just can't beat the food.

One of the most interesting countries in the world. From the ancient religious culture, including the amazing stone churches of Lalibela, to the unique tribal cultures of the Omo Valley in the south Ethiopia has so much to offer the adventurous traveller.

A wonderful country that seems to be on the verge of greatness. Friendly people, excellent food, and host to a number of world-class sights, including: the rock hewn churches of Lalibela and Simien Mountain National Park.
To me, the real highlight of Ethiopia was the people. Friendly, colorful, and engaging. Although I wouldn't put Ethiopia on my short-list of must-see places on planet Earth, it is an interesting place to visit and certainly recommended for experienced travelers who have already seen the other highlights of Africa.
