Restaurants for Local Culture in Ethiopia

Unfortunately way overpriced compared to the other restaurants around town, but none-the-less a fun experience especially if you have a limited time in Ethiopia and would like to see some of the traditional dancing. The traditional cuisine and Tej are both good and the dancing and singing is enjoyable. There are a fair mix of tourists and locals in the ...Popular withBusinessLocalFamilies

Four Sisters restaurant in Gondar is one of the best. Ethiopian food is popular worldwide; Injera is the country’s staple; made from indigenous crop cereal, ‘Teff’. It’s a spongy flatbread. Alone, the texture is akin to a foam mattress. But its topped with 7-8 stewed spiced lentils ‘wat’, as a large circular sharing platter. Sit around, tuck in with your ...Popular withLuxuryFamiliesFoodies

Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (IATA: ADD, ICAO: HAAB) serves the city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The airport is located in the Bole area, 6 km (3.7 mi) south east of Addis Ababa City Centre and 65 km (40 mi) north of Debre Zeyit. Formerly known as Haile Selassie I International Airport, it is the main hub of Ethiopian Airlines, ...

Best burgers in Addis --- by far --- and the owners are awesome. Order the hot chocolate or fruit parfait for dessert. And take your kids (or your inner child), to see the papier-mâché toys they've created. ...but go soon, because the restaurant may be closing to build a high-rise in its place.Popular withFamilies

This is one of the most commonly recommended joints in town for Ethiopian cuisine, and it is certainly delicious. Try the kifto here (raw ground beef marinated in butter and herbs) or the raw steak, have a coffee ceremony, and at night you can listen to traditional music.Popular withLocalFoodies
A popular spot for Ethiopians to go and indulge in a little traditional culture. There is dancing and signing, and plenty of Tej to go around. This is also a great place to try the Kifto (raw ground beef marinated in butter and herbs). Take a camera, and immerse yourself in the intersection of old and new Ethiopia.Popular withLocalFoodies
Addis also hosts some delicious international cuisine, and Avanti is a great place to grab some Italian cuisine. The baked penne is especially delicious, the service is friendly, and end the meal with a special Avanti shot, to smooth out the experience.Popular withFoodiesTrendsters
Just opened at the end of 2013 by the owners of Kaldi's, it is one of the more upscale restaurants in town (pants and shirts with sleeves required) serving delicious Italian dishes. Probably the best pizza in town and the lasagna is tasty too.Popular withFoodiesLuxury
Unfortunately, while perched on the hillside, a big building is under construction right in front of it, obstructing it's "Top View". However, it is a relaxing place to hang out on verdant little terraces. They have milkshakes, ice cream, beers, and bitings and you do feel above the bustle of the city, and out of the concrete jungle at least ...
Billed as the best pizza in town by lp in 2013, it certainly is not (Gusto serves a better pie), however it does offer brick oven pizzas which are tasty and a pleasant laid back environment popular with expats. If you want a break from Ethiopian cuisine, this is not a bad place to take it.Popular withFamilies

A popular stop for tourists as it bills itself as the first coffee shop in Ethiopia, and LP ranks the coffee here highly. It certainly does take its coffee seriously and it does have a nice ambiance with a big painted map of coffee in Ethiopia on the wall and some old coffee making relics strewn throughout the shop. You ...Popular withFoodiesHistory
A chill spot to hang out with good coffee, and decent omelettes. There are tables outside on the street for people watching and an array of sweets and fresh juices inside at the counter to complement the savory breakfast offerings. Do expect about half the items on the menu to not be available though.Popular withFoodies
A little cafe on Bole Avenue with a big Elephant theme. The coffee here is good and the guava juice is quite tasty. There are also some general breakfast and brunch offerings, but I did not stay to eat. There is some nice outdoor seating for a sunny day.
Billed as one of the better coffee shops in town, the coffee is good. However, I was hard pressed the find anything on the menu that they actually had available (fairly common in Addis, but this place was ridiculous). A cool place to sit out on the patio though, and watch the city walk by.
There is a nice patio for drinks and conversation, but unfortunately the food is not very good here. The spaghetti lacks sauce, the pizza lacks flavor, and the burgers cold use a lot more meat and a lot less bread. The fries are good though and the prices are decent.
