Jasper is the anti-Banff. You get all the beauty and with fewer people and less commercialization as a bonus. You are not going to find a Banff Avenue in Jasper, but there are still plenty of nice places to eat and stay here during those times that you're not out exploring nature. And in the winter, Marmot Basin is a very good place to ski.
It also takes a bit longer to get here. Jasper is about a 4 hour drive from Edmonton (compared to 1+ hours from Calgary to Banff) and a long and glorious drive from Lake Louise via the Icefields Parkway. I have also been privileged to take the train here on my way from Edmonton to Vancouver.
Anyway, one of the places I always stop is the Jasper Park Lodge. There is just something about these old Canadian Pacific hotels, that invites you to relax and linger, even if you are not an overnight guest. I particularly enjoy their spacious lobby and relaxing at some spot overlooking the Lake.
And like the relative peace and quiet of the Jasper Town site, you almost feel that you have this National Park all to yourself.Recommended for:
