Not the nicest Fairmont hotel I've been in, but a Fairmont nevertheless. A bit outdated but conveniently located in the center of Montreal. It's best known as the site of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's most famous bed-in. Make sure to register for the President's Club (free membership) to use the complimentary wifi. Otherwise, you'll be spending $16/day. Also, to keep your luggage at the hotel for a few hours is $2 a bag.

The Fairmont Queen Elizabeth is in a very convenient location for a business trip. It is in the business district, on a major road, and the train and subway stations, as well as a huge shopping mall, are connected underground. The one advantage of chain hotels is that you have some idea of what you will get before you ever arrive. I have stayed at other Fairmont chain hotels and this one was no different. The hotel is quite large and plush in a rather old fashioned luxury hotel type of way. When you enter either door, the reception area is not immediately within view, but the doormen and porters quickly direct you to the reception desk. Being in Montreal, the staff first greet you in French, but they are all bilingual. My French must have an obvious English accent since many of the staff switched to speaking English once they heard me speak.
I had a room with a king bed. The room was reasonably spacious with room for a TV and mini bar cabinet, desk, and chair, large armchair and ottoman and space left over to set up a luggage stand. The bathroom was rather tiny. I find most hotels do not give you much shelf or counter space in the bathroom and this was no exception. Nice smelling shampoo, conditioner, bath gel and lotion were provided. They had a hairdryer, but no bathrobe or slippers. The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. You can request turn down service in the evening. My room was away from the elevators, in the middle of a long hallway facing the main street. It proved to be a quiet room.Being there on business meant I did not get much opportunity to explore the hotel. There is a spa, pool and gym which I did not use. I had a late meal in the bistro, Montreal, and a lunch in the Voyageur bar. Both meals were fairly good but not cheap. The very top end restaurant, the Beaver Club, is located on the ground floor.
The hotel room is set up for Internet, but I used the business centre located in the lower lobby. The staff are good at anticipating your needs. Taxis are hailed before you even ask, and at check out, someone was immediately on hand to see if I wanted to store my luggage until later. The hotel is also mid-distance, about 5 blocks, to the edge of Vieux Montreal and about 5 blocks the other way to Sherbrooke Street, which has places of interest and a high end shopping areas.I would recommend this for business travellers, but for pleasure, I prefer Vieux Montreal boutique hotels.Recommended for:Business Travelers

Is the hotel beautiful? Yes. Is it centrally located? Definitely. Is the historic John Lennon and Yoko Ono “Bed In” suite impressive? Absolutely!
The Fairmount Queen E was remarkable for the extra effort that is made to make people feel welcome, every person I interacted with was friendly and, as we say chaleureux, in a very genuine way; but what really impressed me were the sustainability efforts that would satisfy anyone wanting to travel more responsibly. First of all, there is a garden on the roof that produces a fair amount of the hotels herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables that are picked and prepared by the hotel chef; the hotel staff even contributes by taking part in the gardening. Soon the hotel will add a bee keeping project that will supply 100% of the hotels honey needs. Even special touches like having the lobby desert store offer only treats prepared in house or the having an Ocean Wise certification on all seafood products (which is not an easy get). The bike rental service encourages visitors to see the city differently (during the milder months at least) and the rooms and amenities have all been planned to reduce energy, water and waste consumption. No need for me to highlight the fact that the hotel, the rooms and the amenities are all done in the manner one would expect when visiting a Fairmount, but the hotel and staff goes above and beyond, and that has made all the difference.

While researching hotels for a trip to Montreal, I came across the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth. Once I read this was the site of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's most famous bed-in, I knew I had to stay here.
I arrived at the hotel on June 1st and was greeted by a smiling Sarah at the registration desk. She explained that I'd been given a corner room--which was a bit larger than the other king rooms, with views on two sides of the hotel. I was excited to see this extra large room, but I wasn't prepared for my amazing view. When I drew back the drapes, I was greeted by the sight of the beautifully patinaed dome of the Cathedrale Marie Reine du Monde right across the street. The room itself was quite large by most hotel standards, and the furnishings were modern but still appropriate for this historic property.
Over the course of the week, the Fairmont really did come to feel like home. And Sarah was there to help or answer questions whenever I needed her, like the first night when I had planned to walk to dinner at a nearby restaurant, but found that it was raining. In no time at all, she produced an umbrella and sent me on my way.
My stay at the Fairmont was wonderful and I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.
The location above the metro/train station and within walking distance of great restaurants made it ideal for me.
But the highlight of my stay? When I was passing through the lobby, I saw a poster for the "Imagine Peace" exhibition, honoring John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Even though their bed-in at the hotel had been one of the deciding factors for my staying at the Fairmont, with all the jetlag, I'd forgotten about this detail. It turned out I'd checked into the hotel on the 40th anniversary of that historic event!
I am planning to return to Montreal and won't hesitate to stay at the Fairmont again.
