Fairplay sits on a windy plain in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. This is very high cattle country with astounding views in all directions. The tiny downtown has a bit of an Old West feel but is also a place where truckers and travelers stop to gas up.Recommended for:

Fairplay is a charming old mining town. It's fun to explore (it's a small main street), and the old hotel is worth a stay. Fairplay also makes a good base camp if you want to spend the weekend bagging Fourteeners.Recommended for:

Partial to this place for many reasons. The air is devastatingly thin with an elevation of 9300+ feet, but the surrounding mountains are outstanding. Do visit South Park City at the end of Front St. This is a collection of actual historic buildings that have been saved and re-assembled to create an old west town. You, the lucky visitor, get to walk in and around all of them. Almost ghostly.
