Fairplay sits on a windy plain in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. This is very high cattle country with astounding views in all directions. The tiny downtown has a bit of an Old West feel but is also a place where truckers and travelers stop to gas up.

Fairplay is a charming old mining town. It's fun to explore (it's a small main street), and the old hotel is worth a stay. Fairplay also makes a good base camp if you want to spend the weekend bagging Fourteeners.

You must visit South Park if you're coming here, not just because of the show South Park but also because it's an awesome little bit of perfectly restored history and is awesome.

Partial to this place for many reasons. The air is devastatingly thin with an elevation of 9300+ feet, but the surrounding mountains are outstanding. Do visit South Park City at the end of Front St. This is a collection of actual historic buildings that have been saved and re-assembled to create an old west town. You, the lucky visitor, get to walk in and around all of them. Almost ghostly.

Check out this little town for music festivals, eateries and the historic town of South Park.
