Just stand amongst the frail, ragged and famished bodies and let your mind imagine what personal tragedies each had to endure and the many millions that had to follow after them in the hopes of something better. Even more poignant today given that the cemetery gates of emigration have been once again pushed open in this country.

The Famine Memorial on Custom House Quay was donated to the people of Dublin by Norma Smurfit, and is in memory of all victims of the Great Famine, which happened between 1845-1849. It is a constant reminder lest we forget, of a very harsh era, when lots of Irish people died and many were forced to emigrate to survive.

They seem lifelike and sad. The memorial portrays several lost and despairing people wandering down the quay, perhaps to load onto a trip to America or Canada.

A memorial to the many people who lost their lives or left their homes as a result of the Great Potato Famine 1845-1849. Located along the Liffey River.

Description

The Famine Memorial is a sculpture dedicated to the Irish people who were forced to emigrate from their home country during the Irish famine in the 19th century. The statues of gaunt figures were created by Rowan Gillespie, a Dublin sculptor, and presented to the City of Dublin in 1997. It's hard not to be humbled by this reminder of the millions that Ireland lost to starvation and emigration. The ... read more
