A classic! I remember my parents taking me there as a kid to bounce around on the giant piano keyboard made famous by Tom Hanks in the movie Big. As always great fun for the kids in one of the world's biggest and most famous toy stores.

Helllllooo Kittttttty everywhere. Actually, every type of toy seems to be available inside this gigantic play land. Fun to walk though, but too crowded to linger long if close to Christmas or Thanksgiving sales.

Fao Schwarz is not only the oldest toy store in the country, it's also one of the most beloved. Locals and tourists line up every day to get into this wonderland. Life size stuffed animals, enormous dance-on pianos, a doll factory, theme rooms, a candy shop....it's a dream come true for most kids (and an adult here and there).

Yay! FAO Schwarz! I grew up shopping at FAO when I was a kid and there are no FAOs near me in California. Loved the guy dressed as a toy soldier...and the 2 floors of toys toys and more toys. There's also a sweets section with a cafe.

This huge toy store has been featured in several films, but perhaps the most memorable is "Big" in which Tom Hanks plays a child in an adult's body, ready to mess around and have some fun in NYC.

FAO Schwarz is probably the world's most famous toy store and strolling around this fantasy land of neon colored plastic is a signature New York experience, especially at Christmas time. On the ground floor there's lots of candy! All forms of chocolate, gummy animal, bubble gum and the like can be found in these bins. Everywhere else you'll find Lego, Harry Potter, Nerf and just about any popular toy you can think of. The only disappointment for me is that these are all mass-produced toys that you can find at Walmart. Thus, in the end, FAO Schwarz lacks the charm of little Mom & Pop toy stores I've seen in Germany where everything is hand crafted from wood or metal.

Even if you don't have any kids in tow this place is still great fun. It's absolutely packed with toys. It does get very crowded but the muppet factory at the back - where you can have your own muppet custom made more than makes up for it.
