Just outside of Agra (home to the Taj Mahal) the UNESCO World Heritage site of Fatehpur Sikri is on most visitors' to Agra's bucket list. This expansive city was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 16th century out of red sandstone, and while it was abandoned not long after (likely due to a lack of potable water in the area), it remains in stunning condition. Highlights include the Buland Darwaza, an enormous entryway atop a dizzyingly steep flight of stairs--it's rumored to be the largest gate on earth. Just behind the Darwaza is the white marble shrine of Salim Chisti, one of the most venerated Sufi saints of his era.

Beautiful monument not too far from Agra. There are regular buses plying between the 2 cities. The Buland Darwaza is sadly very badly maintained and has been trashed by the locals. The monuments next to it are in excellent condition, thanks to the funding from UNESCO. But definitely worth a visit.
